Root Canal: What Is It?
A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save a badly decayed or damaged tooth. Without this treatment, the tooth can become severely infected and lead to the formation of an abscess.
During the procedure, your dentist at Dental Designs of Plantation will carefully remove the nerve and pulp surrounding your tooth, thoroughly clean the area, and seal it off to protect against further infection.
Why Do You Need a Root Canal?
When a tooth is compromised by decay, trauma, or other factors, it becomes vulnerable to infection.
If this infection reaches the soft pulp inside the tooth, which houses the roots, it can cause significant discomfort and may lead to the development of an abscess. Abscesses are often painful and can cause swelling and tenderness around the affected tooth.
In many cases, the only treatment options for an abscessed tooth are extraction or root canal therapy.
At Dental Designs of Plantation, Dr. Zack Cohen and Dr. John Sarris are committed to preserving your natural teeth whenever possible. If the tooth is restorable and the nerve is infected, a root canal is often the best solution to save the tooth and restore your oral health.
When Do You Need a Root Canal?
You may need a root canal if your tooth is significantly infected or inflamed. Common signs that indicate the need for this procedure include:
- Sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages
- Severe toothache
- Discoloration of the tooth
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to contact Dental Designs of Plantation as soon as possible.
Is a Root Canal Painful?
At Dental Designs of Plantation, we prioritize your comfort during a root canal procedure. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Sarris will take the time to listen to your needs and ensure you feel at ease throughout the process.
To enhance your comfort, we offer a variety of sedation dentistry options, including laughing gas, oral sedation, IV sedation, and NuCalm, so you can relax while we provide the care you need.
How Does a Root Canal Procedure Work?
At Dental Designs of Plantation, root canal therapy involves carefully removing the decayed portion of the tooth and accessing the pulp chamber.
Using thin, precise metal files, Dr. Cohen or Dr. Sarris will remove the infected pulp and nerves within the tooth, thoroughly cleaning the canals inside.
Once the infected pulp is cleared, the canals are sterilized and filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material that melts at a low temperature. This allows us to completely seal the sterilized canals, reducing the risk of future infection.
To ensure your comfort, you’ll receive a local anesthetic before the procedure to eliminate any pain or discomfort. Root canals are a safe and effective way to save a tooth that’s been compromised by infection.
Caring for Your Teeth After a Root Canal
After a root canal, we often recommend placing a dental crown on the treated tooth. By the time a root canal is necessary, the damage is typically too extensive for a filling alone.
A crown helps protect the tooth, which becomes more vulnerable to fractures once the infected tissue is removed.
Most patients experience immediate relief from the pain of an abscess following a root canal. Some tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, like ibuprofen.
If you experience severe pain or swelling after the procedure, contact our Plantation office right away for a follow-up appointment.
