How to Handle a Dental Emergency

Knowing how to handle a dental emergency can significantly impact your oral health and help prevent complications. Here are three essential steps to follow:

  1. Contact our emergency dental team: If you’re facing a dental emergency, call our Plantation office right away. Dr. Zack Cohen or Dr. John Sarris will guide you through what to do next and arrange an emergency appointment.
  2. Manage pain and swelling: Apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed to help manage discomfort.
  3. Control bleeding: If you're experiencing bleeding, rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply light pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to the area until the bleeding stops.

Most Common Types of Dental Emergencies

When it comes to your smile, it’s essential to be prepared for anything! Here are some tips for handling the most common emergencies we see at Dental Designs of Plantation:

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you have a tooth knocked out, it’s crucial to seek immediate attention. For a permanent tooth, hold it by the crown (the top part) and avoid touching the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water, but don’t scrub or remove any tissue fragments.

If possible, try to reinsert the tooth back into its socket. If that’s not feasible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva and get to our office as soon as you can. The chances of saving the tooth are highest when you receive care within the first hour.

Toothache

A severe toothache is one of the most common dental emergencies. It can arise from various issues, such as tooth decay, gum infection, or a dental abscess.

If you’re experiencing a persistent or intense toothache, don’t hesitate to reach out for immediate care from Dr. Cohen or Dr. Sarris.

In the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater, gently floss to remove any trapped debris, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

Broken or Fractured Tooth

If you break or fracture a tooth, contact Dental Designs of Plantation right away. Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area, and apply a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.

If you find any broken tooth fragments, place them in a container with milk or saliva to bring to your appointment. Dr. Cohen or Dr. Sarris will assess the damage and recommend the best treatment options, which may include bonding, dental crowns, or root canal therapy, depending on the severity of the fracture.

Lost Filling or Crown

Losing a filling or crown can expose the sensitive inner layers of your tooth, leading to discomfort and increased risk of further damage. If this happens, schedule an appointment with Dr. Cohen or Dr. Sarris right away.

In the meantime, you can use dental cement or temporary filling material, available at most drugstores, to cover the affected area and protect it from sensitivity and food debris.

Be sure to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until you receive the proper dental treatment.
