4 Reasons to Never Skip Your Dental Cleanings

It can be hard to deal with toothaches and pesky cavities, but those are just two problems that dental cleanings will save you from. Almost everyone has had a dental mishap, but it is easy to neglect them until they start interfering with our regular routine. This is unhealthy.

Most people know already that bad breath, cavities, tooth stains and discoloration, and sometimes chipped teeth are all indications of dental negligence. What many do not know, however, is that the effects of these issues do not stop with the mouth. Every tooth connects to an important part of the body. Poor oral care has been connected to several illnesses, such as gum disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer, respiratory infection and Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, those are just a few of the issues poor oral hygiene can cause.

It is advisable to practice at-home oral care practices such as brushing and flossing twice daily, using dental rinses and avoiding bad habits. Also, regular visits to the dental hygienist for a professional dental cleaning is essential.

Why are dental cleanings important?

The following are four important reasons to always go for routine dental cleanings:

1. Stain elimination

Many believe that they can easily get a toothpaste that promises stain removal and whiter teeth in a few days. The fact is that such products are hardly adequate, and sometimes only work after a long time of use. Dentists have the proper tools and skills to immediately eliminate stains and discolorations on the teeth to give the patient a whiter smile.

2. Prevent bad breath

Irrespective of regular brushing, millions of people still deal with chronic bad breath, also known as halitosis. The problem is not always caused by a dental-related issue. Most times, it is the result of bacteria accumulation in areas of the mouth that are inaccessible to the toothbrush. In this situation, getting professional help is essential.

3. Prevent gum disease

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. The gums provide the teeth with a protective covering. That means a problem could lead to an array of dental issues and infection. During the dental cleaning, the dentist will be able to reverse gum disease in its early stage or provide necessary treatment.

4. Removal of plaque and tartar

Excessive accumulation of plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The teeth are exposed continuously to plaque every day from sugary and starchy foods and drinks. Due to the sticky and acidic nature of plaques, it can be hard to remove through normal brushing. Once the plaques harden, they turn into tartar. Only the dental hygienist can remove tartar.

This is perhaps the most crucial reason to go for dental cleanings. The chances of tooth decay or cavities are lower when the teeth are free of plaque and tartar. Also, during the cleaning process, the dentist will be able to detect signs of decay before it leads to a pulp infection.

Final note

It is advisable to schedule dental cleanings every six months. It is harder to treat certain dental issues at home. Visiting the dental hygienist will ensure your teeth remain healthy and beautiful.
